Championing EDI

Dr. Patel is at the forefront of the fight against structural racism in healthcare and higher education. As Co-Chair of the Medical Schools Council EDI Alliance and former Associate Dean for EDI, he leads national initiatives that drive systemic change across institutions. His contributions have shaped policy through Welsh Government consultations on Anti-Racist Wales and LGBTQ+ inclusivity, while his research tackles differential attainment gaps and bias in medical education. From chairing Cardiff University's Race Equality Charter application to developing innovative EDI training tools, his work transforms intentions into tangible, lasting impact.

Community Impact

Beyond university walls, Dr. Patel believes in opening doors for those traditionally excluded from healthcare professions. Since 2018, he has led the PACE (Promoting Academic Community Excellence) project, partnering with secondary schools in disadvantaged areas of Cardiff to inspire Year 9-11 pupils through hands-on medical education experiences. Through weekly sessions and summer schools led by medical student volunteers, PACE introduces young people to the possibilities of university and healthcare careers—raising aspirations and proving that with the right support, everyone can achieve excellence.
